Is it time to make some mid-year co-parenting resolutions?

On Behalf of | Jul 18, 2025 | Child Custody

While many parents set co-parenting goals in January, July offers another great opportunity to reflect and reset. The end of the school year often inspires a natural pause in a family’s routine. With that shift comes the chance to evaluate what worked during the first half of the year—and what needs to change. Mid-year co-parenting resolutions can help families move forward with more focus and cooperation.

During the busy school months, it is easy to get caught up in the day-to-day demands of parenting. Communication may become strained, responsibilities may feel unbalanced and/or a schedule might prove less effective than originally planned. Summer allows both parents to step back and reassess those patterns without the pressure of nightly homework or early morning bus stops.

Considerations worth contemplating

One helpful resolution might be to improve communication. If text messages have led to confusion or conflict, switching to a shared calendar app or parenting platform may reduce stress. For parents who tend to speak only when necessary, committing to more regular check-ins can build trust and prevent small issues from becoming major disputes.

Another resolution might involve revisiting one’s parenting time schedule. Are the children thriving on the current plan? Have their needs changed with age, summer camps or social interests? Even if a formal, legally enforceable modification is not necessary, a few agreed-upon adjustments might make the rest of the year smoother.

Co-parents can also use mid-year as a time to talk about shared goals. Are both parents supporting consistent rules across homes? Are they working together on school planning or extracurricular choices for the fall? Aligning on major parenting decisions now can help prevent conflict when the next school year begins.

Ultimately, co-parenting is a long-term effort that benefits from regular review. The arrival of mid-summer may not inspire champagne toasts, but it does offer a valuable chance to make meaningful mid-year changes.
