6 Steps To Take After A Car Accident

No one plans on getting into a wreck. Motor vehicle accidents are unsettling, and it can be difficult to clearly think in the minutes after an incident. However, what you say and do in the immediate aftermath of a car crash can significantly impact your physical health and your ability to recover compensation.

If you are involved in a car accident, call our experienced lawyer at 501-623-9800 to schedule your free case evaluation.

Steps To Take After An Accident

The highest priority immediately following a car accident is to stay safe. Leave the car where the accident occurred unless it is unsafe to do so. If you cannot leave your car where the accident happened, safely pull to the side of the road and remain in your car. Additional injuries can occur if proper precautions are not taken after an accident. Once you are in a safe location:

  1. Telephone emergency personnel, including the police. This will allow the police to come to the scene and write an accident report. The police may also want to cite the responsible party for any unsafe driving conditions such as texting while driving or DWI.
  2. Take pictures of your car, the other driver’s car, the surrounding scene of the accident and any visible injuries.
  3. Record key information from the other driver, including:
    1. Name, address, contact information
    2. Car make, model, year and color
    3. Insurance information
  4. Write down the names and contact information of any accident witnesses or passengers in the vehicles.
  5. Seek medical attention even if you do not think that you are injured. Symptoms may not appear until later.
  6. Speak with an attorney before you contact your insurance company.
